As the sun began to set over the 65,000 attendees of this years HFStival,
a monstrous construction began to take shape on the stage as the roadies
frantically began to set up the elaborate video screens, computers, synths,
and other odd gadgets and gizmos that all combine to create the tools in
which the British techno duo, The Chemical Brothers, use to set off those
"Block Rocking Beats". Like some futuristic Frankenstein, the monstrosity was
finished in near record time and the lights went low as the sound system
began to pulsate with a low, steady hum that gradually built up until the
very walls of RFK were vibrating in time. Then, in one gigantic, near
orgasmic release, the whole place explodes with wild beats and vivid images as
the Chemical Brothers proceed to set the whole place dancing in technical
ecstasy.
Perhaps the most popular and acclaimed techno artists working the
circuits today, the Chemical Brothers proved their mettle ten times over in
front of vastly more people than you could find at any rave or club. For
almost an hour the Bros. twisted and tweaked and rolled and writhed in a non
stop frenzy of futuristic sounds and psychedelic images as the crowd ate it
all up like candy. Though due to the enormity of the sound, lighting, and
video equipment that surrounds the two Bros during the performance you can
never actually see the two during the show, the music and images more than
make up for the lack of audience/band interaction.
Finally, at the end, as
the last wave of sound washes over the crowd, the Chemical Bros. make their
one appearance as they walk out from behind and underneath the monster, wave
respectfully to the crowd and continue on backstage. And like ants the
roadies scramble to frantically disassembled the great monster even quicker
than they created it, leaving no trace other than on the memories of 65,000
people of the mind expanding event they all just witnessed.
